About

The Wacky World of Tex Avery (French: Le Monde fou de Tex Avery) is an animated television series produced by DIC Entertainment in association with Les Studios Tex and the French TV channel M6, first airing in 1997. Both the series and its title character are named after American animator Tex Avery, and the show purports itself to be an homage to his works and style. The show itself has been derided as an "insult" to Avery's legacy, while its theme song has seen ironic use in remix videos.

Premise

The show is an anthology show, and episodes are divided in three shorts, each fromone of seven segments: Tex Avery, the title segment; Pompeii Pete; Einstone; Genghis & Khannie; Freddy the Fly; Maurice & Mooch; and Power Pooch. The show, as the title implies, takes inspiration from Tex Avery, an influential American animator, and uses many of the tropes and techniques that made the real Avery famous, including wild takes and fourth wall-breaking humor.

History

The show premiered in 1997[2]. It was a coproduction between the United States and France, with the companies involved being DIC Entertainment, Les Studios Tex SARL, Milimetros, M6 and Telcima. The show first aired in France on September 3, 1997, and in the United States on September 29, ending after one season of 65 episodes (totaling 195 segments) in December of the same year. It entered development in 1995, under the name Tex Avery Theater, when DIC co-founded a studio in France and acquired the rights to use Tex Avery's name from his estate.[1]

Reception

While intial impressions of the show were rather positive[2], in recent years, the show has been heavily criticized by many, including animation fans and reviewers. In particular, some found it disrespectul to the real Tex Avery, since the show premiered 17 years after his death, and opined that it didn't use his style of humor well, given that the show tended to stay on model despite its namesake becoming famous for pushing the boundaries of animation.[3] Author David Perlmutter wrote that it "lacked the masterful way [Avery] employed and often transcended the limits of his material".[5] Nancy Arkley, Tex Avery's daughter and a consultant for the show, has since revealed that she only agreed to it to help pay for her children's college tuition[4], which YouTuber The Mysterious Mr. Enter described as "[making one realize] how little one of the most revolutionary cartoonists of all time made in his life".[3]

Intro Remixes

[WIP]

As early as the late 2010s, the show has gained some resurgence as the subject of ironic memes. One of the earliest examples was a video tweet by user Hyper Seap[6], which featured gameplay footage from Donkey Kong Country Returns edited so that Diddy Kong sings the final chorus from the opening theme:

Beginning in mid-to-late 2024, several X/Twitter users began uploading remixes of the intro, after user Hanna-Barbera Screencaps (HannaBarberaCap) uploaded it to their account.[7] Around the same time, discussions around the show also became more prevalent, with most attesting to its poor quality and humor, as well as its being a disservice to the real Tex Avery's legacy. Fellow user ScorbunnyDream[8] quoted the HannaBarberaCap's original post with a mashup in which Robbie Rotten pulls a background over the intro as it begins, warning, "Don't let your kids watch it!"

Another user, HibbySloth[9], timed clips from the intro to that of The Ren and Stimpy Show.
