Background
On December 1st, 1976, Laura Gilpin's poetry collection The Hocus-Pocus of the Universe was published, winning the 1976 Walt Whitman Award.[1] The collection includes a short poem titled "The Two-Headed Calf" about a calf born with two heads that dies as a result, as most two-headed animals die shortly after their birth (excerpt show below).[2][3]
Tomorrow when the farm boys find this
freak of nature, they will wrap his body
in newspaper and carry him to the museum.
But tonight he is alive and in the north
field with his mother. It is a perfect
summer evening: the moon rising over
the orchard, the wind in the grass. And
as he stares into the sky, there are
twice as many stars as usual.
