Overview

UrbanSPOOK is an analog horror-themed YouTube channel, created in late 2022, that makes creepypasta-style videos about a serial killer who mutilates and then paints his victims. The channel has been criticized for relying on shock value and gore, with some critics pointing to a story involving child sexual abuse (CSA) and subsequent merchandise released in reference to the video.

History

UrbanSPOOK posted its first video on November 3rd, 2022, titled, "ANALOG HORROR – FACES."[1] The description of the video states; "I just started converting VHS tapes to digital and I found a bunch of tapes in the basement of my apartment complex, this was on one of them." The video gathered over 760,000 views in a year (seen below). The video featured paintings supposedly made by a serial killer, alongside descriptions of how he murdered his victims.

The channel continued to post videos as part of the "Analog Horror" series, with a December 27th, 2022, upload titled, "ANALOG HORROR – THE LIGHTHOUSE"[2] gathering over 350,000 views in one year (seen below, left) and a January 10th, 2023, upload titled, "ANALOG HORROR – IN THE WALLS"[3] gathering over 400,000 views in 11 months (seen below, right).

Criticism

UrbanSPOOK has been criticized by some viewers who think that his style of horror relies too much on shock and gore, with many critics pointing to the January 10th, 2023, episode "IN THE WALLS," which depicts UrbanSPOOK's serial killer abusing and mutilating a child.[4][5]

On May 9th, 2023, Redditor[6] /u/RedactedN86 posted a meme noting how UrbanSPOOK's merch uses paintings made by his fictional serial killer (seen below).

"whats the shirt I'm wearing? oh it's a painting of Daniel after the fire!!"

On April 28th, 2023, YouTuber minaxa posted a video[7] criticizing UrbanSPOOK, gathering over 180,000 views in seven months (seen below). The video has since been unlisted.

Criticism of UrbanSPOOK continued to mount in subsequent months, with the creator sometimes negatively responding to criticism against him.

On September 14th, X[8] user @pastraspec made a post criticizing UrbanSpook, saying "it relies entirely on trying to describe the most vile thing possible with little else" (seen below, left). UrbanSPOOK was then accused of using an alternative account to post a reply reacting to the criticism that has since been deleted but was notably ratioed before removal (seen below, right).[9]

Pastra @pastraspec We need to stop praising series that rely entirely on shock value to carry their horror. Stuff like Urbanspook drives me nuts because the only "horror" it has relies entirely on trying to describe the most vile thing possible with little else.
