About

Amazing Grace (Analog Horror) is an analog horror meme which uses a 1922 recording of the 1772 hymn Amazing Grace. The meme uses the song being played during violent scenes from various media along with the shocked expression of one of the characters from said media.

Origin

The hymn Amazing Grace was performed by Original Sacred Harp Choir and recorded to vinyl record in July 1922 under the name New Britain C.M..[1] A high-quality vinyl rip of the song recording (shown below, left) was posted to YouTube by BBYMRLCCOTN on June 1st, 2020.[2] Its earliest usage in analog horror was in The Mandela Catalogue Vol. 333, (shown below, right) which was posted to YouTube by Alex Kister on June 3rd, 2022.[3]

On May 5th, 2023, YouTube user Castoreo[4] used the song in a video of clips from the cartoon Family Guy, which shows scenes of characters being brutally killed and flashing Chris Griffin's shocked face between the scenes. The video (shown below) received over 239,000 views in over one year.

Spread

On May 14th, 2023, YouTube user bendyjw[4] posted an edit of Castoreo's video that degrades the video quality to resemble an analog horror. The video (shown below) received over 3.1 million views in over one year.

Various Examples

Hey Apple! What? "Amazing Grace"

Hey Apple! What? "Amazing Grace" also known as Annoying Orange "Amazing Grace," refers to an edited scene from The Annoying Orange in which The Annoying Orange says "Hey Apple!" to which Apple says "What?" and then The Annoying Orange is shown with a gaping mouth and an uncanny face while an old-timey rendition of the song "Amazing Grace" plays. The creepy and scary video, reminiscent of Analog Horror, was originally posted to YouTube in June 2023, later spreading to TikTok in August 2023 where a photo slideshow and reanimation trend emerged.
