About

Local 58 is a sci-fi horror creepypasta webseries created by Kris Straub told in a series of hijacked 'local news' broadcasts. The broadcasts are edited to be reminiscent of local news broadcasts, but with hijacking broadcasts sending odd messages about the moon and telling of attacks on America from foreign entities.

History

"Local 58" videos began appearing on the internet as early as 2016. On May 1st, 2016, one of the videos appeared on /r/truecreepy,[4] linking to a video that has since been deleted. On September 30th, 2017, Kris Straub, who is also the manager of Ichor Falls, the website from which Candle Cove originated, created a new channel for hosting Local 58 videos.[3] The channel's first video was uploaded a month later on October 31st, 2017 and titled "LOCAL58 – You Are On The Fastest Available Route"(shown below). The video depicted a dashcam of a car driving while the GPS was hijacked, telling the driver to go into a forest with unmarked roads, where the driver encounters an alien and is presumably killed. To date the video has over 1 million views.

In the two years since the channel's creation, it has uploaded seven more videos. Its second and third videos are the most popular, each gaining over 1 million views (shown below).

Online Relevance

Local 58's official Youtube channel has received over 210,000 subscribers since its creation.[1] The series has been covered by TV Tropes[7] and it has its own Wiki.[6] It has also been mentioned in several /r/truecreepy threads as fans of the series spread it on Reddit.[4][5] On January 19th, 2018, it was covered by Dread Central.[2]
