About
Peringatan Darurat (En. Emergency Warning) refers to a protest movement against gubernatorial and mayoral election law changes in Indonesia, that uses a screenshot of an Analog Horror-like EAS (Emergency Alert System) alert with the phrases "peringatan darurat" and "Burung Garuda," which are symbols of Indonesia. It grew popular with parodies and fan art related to the protest.
Origin
On August 21st, 2024, Twitter / X[1] user @BudiBukanIntel uploaded an image of an analog horror EAS parody with the message "peringatan darurat," a warning phrase used in such games. The post received more than 9,000 reposts and 38,000 likes in two days (shown below).
The image was from the video "EAS Indonesia Concept (24/10/1991), ANM-021 (Mesem) – First Encounter" by YouTube[5] user EAS Indonesia Concept on October 24th, 2022. The video received over 275,000 views in two years (shown below).
Spread
Although it was supposedly used for a joke, the image grew popular because it was posted coinciding with an Indonesian protest about the upcoming Regional Election, and thus was adopted for use at the protests. For example, on August 21st, 2024, Indonesian media outlet Narasi Newsroom, along with host Najwa Shihab on their official Instagram[2] account, reposted the image and received more than 3.9 million likes in two days.
On August 21st, 2024, Twitter / X[3] user @TrendAsia_Org uploaded a compilation of Twitter / X users who shared the "peringatan darurat" image in protest. The post received more than 84,000 reposts and 176,000 likes in two days (shown below, left). The next day, Twitter / X[4] user @siimpersons uploaded a post about "buzzer" or 50 Cent Party who wants to counter the protest by asking people to make a post about "Indonesia baik-baik saja" which in English means "Indonesia is fine," and they will pay people who post it up to 25 million Rupiah, or about 1,600 US Dollars. The post received over 21,000 reposts and 57,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).
However, most Indonesians are using the image as a reference for art supporting the protests. For example on August 21st, 2024, Twitter / X[6] user @artistsbase uploaded art of Lady Justice controlled by the government with the "peringatan darurat" image as a background (drawn by Twitter / X user @__lidd__). The post received over 1,900 reposts and 6,500 likes in two days (shown below, left). On the same day, Twitter / X[7] user @kalsyumtulag uploaded art that received 10,000 reposts and 33,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
