Overview

Urusei Yatsura is a comedy manga and anime series by Rumiko Takahashi about a man, Ataru Moroboshi and an alien girl, Lum the Invader Girl, that believes she is Ataru's wife. The manga was published between 1978 and 1987 and was adapted to anime, which ran from 1981 to 1986. In 2022, a reboot of the series was announced, causing a resurgence in interest in the series online.

History

Plot

Urusei Yatsura is about an alien race called the Oni that comes to earth and offers the people a chance to save their planet from takeover by playing "the game of the Oni," a tag-like game where a human has touch touch an Oni's horns within a week. Ataru Moroboshi is picked as the player who has to tag the Oni, while Lum is chosen as the Oni he has to tag. Atatru wins the game by stealing her bra, which forces her to stop covering her horns and cover her chest to keep modest. Ataru is happy to win because now he can marry his girlfriend, but as he expresses his excitement, Lum mistakes it as a proposal and accepts it on a worldwide broadcast.

Manga

The manga series was published in "Weekly Shōnen Sunday" between 1978 and 1987, ending with chapter 366.

Anime

The manga was adapted to an anime by Kitty Films and ran on Fuji TV between October 14th, 1981 and March 19th, 1986.

Reboot

In a January 2022 volume of the Japanese paper "Sankei Shimbun" included an ad of Lum that announced that a new anime adaptation of Urusei Yatsura was being created to air on Fuji TV later in the year (shown below).
