Theories and rumors about Super Mario 64 have circulated online regarding secret content in Super Mario 64 since release day, the most famous of these being "L is real 2401,"[5] a theory that stated Luigi could appear in the game and an almost-unreadable blurry plaque in the garden that can be read as "L Is Real 2401" may be a clue.

Conspiracy theories regarding Super Mario 64 began growing more prominent in late 2019 and early 2020. One of the earliest theories was known as "The Wario Apparition." "The Wario Appration" refers to a screenshot from a 1996 E3 video where Wario monologues to the viewer, while voiced by Charles Martinet. The earliest known instance of this screenshot appeared in a /v/ thread as early as November 2019. [3]

The fun with this game will never end. We'll BLJ, and our children's children will BLJ.

I always felt that these sort of prerelease images and footage of games always had an intangible mystique to them, especially ones from the N64 era. The night time version of inside Peach's Castle from its earlier design kind of non-verbally explains a feeling of intangibility that you long wish to satisfy by playing these games.

And when people dump a prototype copy of a game, that mystique is laid to rest.

Ultimate deepest theory: Nintendo’s early prototypes of SM64 were actually terrible, so they really did hire “this man” to use his incredible UE4 skills to make the game good. The discarded prototype was then found by an employee at Accolade and used to create Bubsy 3D.
