Super Mario 64 IRL Edits refer to videos usually of real-life actions that have been remixed to include effects and music from the video game Super Mario 64.

Origin

The earliest known video to apply such an edit was posted to YouTube by user The Fakes on June 29th, 2012 (shown below)



Spread

The edits began growing more popular in the late 2010s. One of the first popular videos of this ilk was posted December 1st, 2017 by YouTuber EvinEdits, who gained over 410,000 views (shown below, left). On January 18th, 2018, YouTuber Arthadoor posted a remix using a clip from Family Guy, gaining over 750,000 views (shown below, right).



The videos began to trend over the following year, with a large amount of videos being posted in the beginning of 2019. Some examples include a video by Some Random Stuff that gained over 486,000 views (shown below, left) and one by JejkobbB that gained over 350,000 views (shown below, right).



The videos also grew popular on Instagram, where posts by igotsilver[1] and cursededits4u[2] gained over 199,000 and 40,000 views, respectively. Edits also grew popular on /r/youtubehaiku. A March 13th, 2019 post there by user ThrowawayAct1337[3] gained over 7,300 points (shown below, left). A March 17th post to the subreddit by Alanderus gained over 6,300 points[4] (shown below, right).
