Sweet Mango IPL Meme refers to memes and jokes made in reference to a series of internet interactions between various Indian Premier League cricketers during the league's 2023 edition. After the RCB vs. LSG clash which involved Afghan pacer, Naveen-ul-Haq, the bowler sparked a series of memes featuring mangos by posting a cryptic Instagram story in early May 2023. Memes about al Huq and mangos began trending in Indian meme circles in May 2023.
Origin
On May 1st, 2023, IPL teams Royal Challengers Bangalore's Virat Kohli and Lucknow Super Giants' Gautam Gambhir had a brief clash after their match against other. On May 9th, LSG bowler Naveen-ul-Haq posted an Instagram[1] story showing him watching the LSG vs RCB game and eating mangos (seen below).
Spread
On May 24th, 2023, the Lucknow Super Giants were booted from the league after being defeated by the Mumbai Indians, sparking off a series of mango memes made in reference to Naveen's aforementioned Instagram posts. Twitter[2] account @swiggy posted a tweet in reference to ul Haq's mago post, gathering over 15,000 likes in a week (seen below, left). Zomato's official Twitter[3] account posted a similar image, gathering over 43,000 likes in a week (seen below, right).
On May 24th, the Twitter[4] account @mufaddal_vohra reposted a now-deleted image from a Mumbai Indian bowler Sandeep Warrier's Instagram, gathering over 60,000 likes in a week (seen below, left). Also on May 24th, the Twitter[5] account for the Lucknow Super Giants posted an image showing them "muting" words about mangos, gathering over 48,000 likes in a week (seen below, right).
