About
Syobon Action (しょぼんのアクション Shobon no Akushon?), also known as Cat Mario, is a 2D Japanese freeware video game released in 2007. The game contains elements parodying the classic Nintendo video game Super Mario Brothers and is known for its high level of difficulty.
History
Syobon Action was created by a Japanese developer named ちく (Chiku) over the course of three days in February of 2007. The game was inspired by a flash game titled The Big Adventure of a Dead End Life (人生オワタ\(^o^)/の大冒険 Jinsei Owata no Daibōken?),[2] which was often played by members on the text board 2channel. Much of the game's music consists of MIDI renditions of music from other video games, including Cheetahmen II, Spelunker, Ghosts 'n Goblins, and Puyo Puyo. The game was ported to the Nintendo Wii console on the Homebrew Channel application.[11] A PSP homebrew version of the game was released by developer DanielBR.[15]
Gameplay
The game contains elements that parody the 1985 platform game Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The player controls a cat-like character who must navigate four different levels, each concealed with traps designed to trick the player. The traps are scattered around the level and are typically activated when the player approaches them. Some designers have commented on how the game requires the player to think logically through trial-and-error in order to complete the game.
