About

The Tank Engine Dance, known as "Ōnyūdō Thomas" (大入道トーマス) on the Japanese web, refers to a series of videos where two half-naked men dance with a remixed version of the theme song for Thomas The Tank Engine. This viral video has inspired parodies on Niconico since late 2016.

Origin

On September 11th, 2016, Denpachi (電八, @DENPACHI13), a Japanese musical composer and rapper from hip hop group PsycoXP, started this video series with a post on Vine.[1] In that video, Denpachi, a fat bald man, and Daiki (だいき), his younger brother, are half-naked and dancing to a remixed version of Thomas the Tank Engine Theme with straight faces. The song used in the video, "Thomas The Tank Engine Theme (White Cat Mix)," was created by musician Shironyan (しろにゃん, @_shironyan) and published on the now-defunct audio-sharing service TmBOX on March 12th, 2016.[2] This Vine video had played more than a million times until takedown. Then, Denpachi posted the 17-sec full version to Twitter on November 8th (shown below).[3]

Spread

According to Nico Nico Pedia[4], Niconico user and MAD video creator BATO_Zip (ばとじっぷ) posted the first parody for that video while featuring HSI (翡翠, Hisui)[5], one of the Cookie☆ voice actors starring in a fan-made audio drama for Touhou Project, on November 11th, 2016 (shown below, left). It was also the first instance referring to Dempachi as "Ōnyūdō", a Japanese old, giant, and bald Yokai.[6] Following this naming, another Niconico user uploaded a reprint of the full version on December 19th[7], which led to the increase of the visibility of this video and him with that nickname among both Cookie☆ and Inmu, or A Midsummer Night's Lewd Dream, fans. Besides, Niconico user Migiru (右る) released a Miku Miku Dance motion data replicating Denpachi's dance on May 6th, 2018 (shown below, right), which added dozens of videos of 3D animated characters dancing to the music on Niconico and YouTube.[8][9]

On May 31st, 2019, Japanese online singer, songwriter, and YouTuber Yuyu-uta[10] collaborated with Dempachi and posted a tank engine dance video (shown below). This video had played over 1.5 million times within its first year (shown below). Besides, Denpachi and Daiki have posted the dance annually since that year.[11][12][13][14]
