Telegram Duck GIFs, also known as Telegram Duck Stickers or Utya Duck Telegram Stickers, refers to a GIF sticker pack on Telegram depicting yellow ducklings emoting. The GIFs and stickers were created by Serbian artist Egor Zhgun in 2019 and they became widely used on Telegram going into the 2020s. In early 2024, the Smoking Duck GIF went viral on Twitter / X, prompting the ducks' usage as reaction images and exploitables. In turn, many added to the duck character's lore.

Origin

On September 4th, 2019, a GIF sticker pack called Utya Duck was created for Telegram^[1] by Serbian artist Egor Zhgun.^[2] It was posted in the channel Trending Stickers 🍒, gaining over 65,100 views in five years, leading with a promo GIF depicting many of the duck characters (shown below).

On April 16th, 2020, the Utya Duck sticker pack was shared by Egor Zhgun to the website Behance,^[3] gaining over 25,000 views in four years.

Spread

Going into the 2020s, the duck GIFs were reposted online, such as to the website Tenor^[4] in 2020.

Memtic usage of the Utya Duck GIFs predominantly spread outside of Telegram in early 2024, following a slew of viral posts on X that used the Duck Smoking GIF. The slew started with tweets shared by X^[5] user @brandochii, like a meme shared on March 18th, 2024, that received over 820 likes in six days (shown below, left).

The posts became increasingly exploited, like a meme shared by X^[6] user @computer_gay on March 23rd, 2024, that referenced the Two Dumb Bitches Telling Each Other 'Exactlyyyyy' meme, gaining over 169,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).

On March 24th, 2024, X^[7] user @ziarastar tweeted a new Utya Duck GIF, showing the yellow duckling laughing. @ziarastar referenced the acronym IJBOL, receiving over 46,000 likes in four days (shown below, left).

Soon after on March 24th, 2024, X^[8] user @islandthembo tweeted four Utya Duck GIFs, captioning them, "I think I just pieced together this duck’s lore omg," receiving over 87,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).

Usage of the Telegram Duck GIFs continued into late March 2024, spreading to platforms like Instagram,^[9] among others.
