The image, which appears to have been taken from a TikTok, Reels or Shorts video, first became the subject of memes in September 2024 and became increasingly popularized throughout early 2025 as a way of calling a subject out for inserting themselves into a situation they don't belong in, similarly to the Polar Bear In Arlington Texas meme.

The exact origins of the "the dude nobody invited" meme are unclear. The meme appears to be a screenshot from a video.

On September 20th, 2024, Instagram^[1] user nocontextphilly posted a meme consisting of an image of MLB player Taijuan Walker next to the "the dude nobody invited" meme, garnering over 2,000 likes in six months. This is the earliest known post sharing the meme.

Spread

The meme became increasingly popularized over the following months as a way of pointing out someone or something that doesn't belong in a given situation.

For example, on January 16th, 2025, X^[2] user @zpokrr posted the meme in response to a post by video game developer Ubisoft sharing its excitement over the Switch 2 announcement, garnering over 85,000 likes in two months.

On January 19th, Instagram^[3] user el_bandisel reposted the meme on its own, garnering over 50,000 likes in the same span of time.

On February 9th, 2025, X^[4] user @alicunts posted the meme under the caption, "non americans on the tl telling us they don’t care about the super bowl," garnering over 92,000 likes in a month. A screenshot of the post was reposted by Instagram^[5] user bloutgoggles that day, garnering over 10,000 likes in the same span of time.

On March 11th, X^[6] user @kuwanasvapepen posted the meme under the caption, "how it feels joining in on oomf’s convo on the tl," garnering over 24,000 likes in a day.
