About
The Lonely Stoner Seems to Free His Mind is a line from the song "Day 'n' Nite" by rapper Kid Cudi. In early 2019, over a decade since the song was first released, the quote became a copypasta on Twitter with which people posted surreal and humorous pictures.
Origin
"Day 'n' Nite" was released by Kid Cudi on February 5th, 2008, on Cudi's breakthrough mixtape A Kid Named Cudi[1] and was the lead single on his debut album, Man on the Moon. The song was a massive success, peaking at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.[2]
In the following years, the song grew into something of an anthem among Marijuana enthusiasts. The "lonely stoner" lyric was commonly posted to Twitter in the 2010s by marijuana-themed accounts, often with an artistic picture representing marijuana-inspired existential moments (examples shown below).
Spread
In early 2019, the "lonely stoner" tweets became subject of parody by users who paired the lyric with more surreal and nonsensically humorous pictures. Some of the first examples include tweets by users @boyswearmugler[3] and @_ericcurtin[4] (shown below).
The trend grew more popular in March of 2019. Popular posts from then include tweets by @MediumWilly, who gained over 2,400 retweets and 20,000 likes (shown below, left), and @hentai__police, who gained over 35 retweets and 270 likes (shown below, right). The memes were covered by Digg.[5]
