The Unction refers to a catchphrase and a series of image macro memes based on the African American Vernacular English (AAVE) internet slang terms Unc Status and "function." The memes started around January 2024 on TikTok but gained notoriety on Instagram in November of the same year with a macro "THE UNCTION!" over a picture of a group of elderly Black Americans at a party. The image became a viral reaction image on Twitter / X and Reddit in March 2025, usually posted to mock someone's age.

Origin

On January 7th, 2024, TikTok ^[1] user @undergroundsound92 posted an edited version of a viral video featuring a group of older African American men dancing at a party, calling it, "The Unction," which is one of the earliest mentions of the catchphrase online. The video amassed roughly 20,000 plays and 395 likes in a year (seen below).

On November 14th, 2024, Instagram^[2] user @xofficialfoxx posted a low-resolution screenshot of a picture featuring several well-dressed elderly Black Americans at a club, captioning it, "rolling up to the unction." The post (seen below) received roughly 30 likes in five months.

Spread

The catchphrase and image were popularized as a reaction image in memes on X and Reddit in the next few months, often used to reference someone's age.

For example, on March 26th, 2025, X^[3] user @ShereefKeef posted the unction meme as a reaction to the X-Men characters announced in the cast of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie Avengers: Doomsday. The post (seen below) amassed more than 1 million views and 39,000 likes in two days.

On March 2nd, 2025, X^[4] user @Ic3Evaa posted the unction meme to mock Solly March and Danny Welbeck, two professional footballers for the England team Brighton & Hove. The post (seen below) amassed roughly 17,000 views and 474 likes in three weeks.

The unction meme also went viral on Reddit, especially in sports-related subreddits. For instance, on January 25th, 2025, Redditor^[5] u/markusninja posted the meme to the Manchester City subreddit, writing, "Gundo, Kova and Bernardo masterclass against a 400m midfield under the age of 25." The post (seen below) received over 290 likes and eight comments in two months.
