Origin

On August 22nd, 2021, Tumblr user pixellecutie^[1] posted an image macro of several fish with the caption, "There are many benefits to being a marine biologist." They captioned the post, "Had a dream where this became the new meme for a bit." The post gained over 49,000 notes in four days (shown below).

Spread

In the ensuing thread, users offered their contributions to the hypothetical new meme. For example, user catgirl-kaiju^[2] posted an image macro featuring anime girls (shown below, left). User lipid^[3] added a picture of friends hanging out underwater (shown below, right).

The meme also grew popular in the Facebook group "Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends." For example, on August 26th, user Jacob Pendleton^[4] posted a meme that gained over 6,900 likes and reactions in less than eight hours (shown below, left). The same day, Linnaeus Favian Yang^[5] posted an Oops! All Berries box parody with the phrase, gaining over 680 likes and reactions (shown below, right).
