This is an American Joke is a quote from the Ichigo Mashimaro (Eng. Strawberry Marshmallow) anime series. The quote has turned into an exploitable image series depicting a student writing something on the blackboard which she called an "American joke." In the parodies, social media users added meme references to represent what she calls an "American Joke."

Origin

On July 28th, 2005, Episode 3 of Ichigo Mashimaro anime series titled "家庭訪問" (Jap. Katei Hōmon, Eng. House Call) was released. In the episode, there is a scene in which a character named Matsuoka Miu is called to the front of the class by the teacher to solve a math problem on the blackboard. Instead, she writes something and claims it is an "American joke." On March 11th, 2016, YouTube[1] user Moe & GAR – HD Anime Highlights uploaded the clip titled "Ichigo Mashimaro – Matsuoka Miu in class". The video received more than 59,000 views in 5 years (shown below).

The clip didn't get popular until 2020, when users began editing the scene by adding memes to represent the "American Joke" on YouTube. For example, on April 7th, 2020, YouTube[2] user git gud uploaded video titled "american joke". In the video, they added Loss. The video received more than 34,000 views in one year (shown below, left). On April 12th, 2020, YouTube[3] user kmlkmljkl uploaded the most popular variation of the meme to date with more than 100,000 views in one year. The video added Pickle Rick (shown below, right).

On April 22nd, 2020, Reddit[4] user chaosgiantmemes uploaded a template version of the format to the /r/animemebank subreddit (shown below, left). A few days later, Reddit[5] user thewinnieston uploaded a version of the format adding Lord Marquaad E meme to the /r/Animemes subreddit, gaining 70 points (shown below, right).

On July 3rd, 2021, Facebook[8] user Bernhard Krieghoff reposted a video that added Wojak and Yes Chad memes. The video was received 796 reactions and 2,308 shares (shown below).

On July 12th, 2021, Instagram[6] user @Rujak.Asam uploaded a variation that added Wojak rage face. The video received more than 13,000 views in six days (shown below). On the same day, Facebook[7] page Perkumpulan Orang Santai edited @Rujak.Asam's video and added Rickroll, receiving more than 2,100 reactions and 388 shares.
