The exact origin of "TMTFO" is unclear, however, on January 10th, 2025, TikToker^[1] @user112085667 posted a selfie video captioned, "when he puts his hand on my inner thigh and I have to act like I just didn't tmtfo," garnering over 2.5 million views in three months. This is the earliest known time that the abbreviation was used in a video or meme.

It was also notably defined on Urban Dictionary^[2] on January 15th by user Aydanandsheep, who defined it simply by spelling out the acronym and including the example sentence, "when he touches my thighs he tmtfo."

Spread

The abbreviation became increasingly popularized on TikTok over the following months in early 2025, often used alongside similar phrases or the same phrase.

For example, on March 28th, 2025, TikToker^[3] @naypluszay posted a video using a similar caption, garnering over 2.5 million views in just under a month.

On April 13th, TikToker^[4] @venald.b posted a video using the same caption, garnering over 940,000 views in roughly a week.
