About
Trump's Note For Biden refers to reports that former President Donald Trump left a note for incoming President Joe Biden before leaving office, as has become a tradition among United States Presidents as they leave office. On Twitter, the news of the note was met with multiple parodies, as people imagined the note to be famous notes from television and film or mean-spirited.
Origin
Prior to the January 20th, 2021 Inauguration of Joe Biden, Donald Trump announced he would not attend, making him the fourth President in United States history to not attend the inauguration of his successor.[1] While this was seen as a snub from an embittered Trump, he did write a letter to Biden, as has been a tradition since Ronald Reagan wrote a letter to George H.W. Bush. The contents of the letter were not disclosed. The news was tweeted by several political reporters on Twitter, such as @Yamiche,[2] whose tweet gained over 2,500 quote-tweets, mostly from people making jokes about the letter's contents.
Spread
As news of the note spread around Twitter, multiple users made jokes using famous notes from popular culture. For example, user @DJDadMCMom6x9x[3] posted Homer's drunken note to Marge from The Simpsons, gaining over 50 retweets and 290 likes (shown below, left). User @ssmith2452[4] posted the Anonymous Letter To Sammi meme, gaining over 2,400 retweets and 8,600 likes (shown below, right).
The multitude of parodies led "Dear Joe" to trend on Twitter.[5] Other popular examples include tweets from @HispanicRic,[6] who posted a still from The Office, gaining over 2,000 retweets and 13,000 likes (shown below, left), and @pubmerchant,[7] who referenced the Eminem song Stan, gaining over 1,000 retweets and 6,100 likes (shown below, right).
