Underwear Tier Lists or Panty Tier Lists refer to a series of tier list memes in which characters in anime series and other franchises are categorized by the type of underwear they presumably wear. Originating in March 2022 and popularized by a viral Chainsaw Man version, the format gained virality online in December 2022, spreading over the following weeks.

Origin

On March 23rd, 2022, Facebook^[1] page Kyoto Animation posted a tier list of female anime characters from various Kyoto Animation anime series with each line in the list represented by a type of panty. The post accumulated over 14,000 reactions and 3,400 shares in the group in eight months (shown below).

Later that day on March 23rd, following the initial Facebook post, Redditor^[2] CyberK_121 then reposted the image with a caption criticizing it. The post gained over 10,700 upvotes in eight months.

Spread

The format did not achieve a significant presence online until November 2022. On November 27th, Twitter user @CSPerfectShot shared^[3] a humorous Chainsaw Man version of the meme (created by an unknown user) featuring Makima, Power and other female characters, which received over 2,200 retweets and 37,100 likes one month (seen below).

Following the viral spread of the post, more similar humorous versions of underwear tier lists were shared online on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and other sites. For example, on December 14th, 2022, the Facebook^[4] page Genco posted a Berserk version of the meme that gained over 310 reactions and 160 shares (shown below, left). A December 23rd, repost by the Facebook^[5] page Berserk, Dark Souls and Bloodborne Fans gained over 5,300 reactions and 1,100 shares in two weeks. On December 23rd, Redditor^[6] Fanini then posted a Half-Life version of the meme that garnered over 1,700 upvotes in two weeks (shown below, right).
