About
Upvoting on Mobile refers to a series of memes about perceived difficulties with upvoting content while using the official Reddit mobile app.
Origin
On April 7th, 2016, the official Reddit mobile app was launched for iOS and Android[1]. On launch, the app displays upvote and downvote buttons on the right side of the screen (shown below, left). The app was subsequently redesigned, with upvote and downvote buttons relocated closer to the left side of the screen (shown below, right), making them more difficult to access for right-handed users.
In December 2018, memes containing comments on the app design started appearing on Reddit, primarily in /r/dankmemes subreddit. On December 25th, 2018, Redditor[2] JASimpso uploaded the earliest known instance of the meme. The post gained over 18,600 upvotes in five days. Additionally, a repost[3] of the image in /r/memes subreddit gained 14,800 upvotes within the same period.
Spread
Within the next week, more memes about perceived difficulties with pressing the upvote button in the app appeared in various subreddits, including /r/dankmemes[4], /r/animemes[5] and /r/pewdiepiesubmissions[6].
