WaveWave is the ship pairing between Soundwave and Shockwave from the Transformers series. WaveWave became increasingly popular in the Transformers fandom, specifically for the animated series Transformers: Prime, throughout the 2010s, inspiring a significant amount of fan art and fanfiction that continued into the 2020s on sites like Tumblr and AO3.

Origin

The exact origins of the WaveWave ship pairing are unknown. One of the earliest known pieces of romantic fanfiction between the WaveWave pairing specifically relating to Transformers: Prime was posted to AO3^[1] by ks_villain on January 9th, 2013. The pairing begame increasingly popular on the website over the following years, inspiring over 260 works of fiction in 10 years.

Spread

Artwork depicting the pairing became increasingly popular throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s. For example, on May 20th, 2017, DeviantArt^[2] user UraniumKiss posted a piece of WaveWave artwork that gained over 50 favorites in six years (shown below, left). On September 25th, 2019, Twitter^[3] user @kurxxo posted a piece of artwork that gained over 910 likes in four years (shown below, right).

On February 4th, 2023, Tumblr^[4] user the-ratt-king posted a few pieces of WaveWave fan art that gained over 1,900 notes in three months. On Febraury 21st, Tumblr^[5] user yasbeych posted a piece of artwork depicting Soundwave showing Shockwave his mixtapes, garnering over 950 notes in three months (shown below).
