About
"What Am I Fighting For" is an infamous line from the 1997 video game Mega Man X4 for the Playstation spoken by the lead character Zero. Mega Man X4 marked the move of the series from the SNES to the Playstation system. The game consisted of voice acting and anime cutscenes, many of which have been ridiculed by it's fanbase.
Origin
A particular case comes during Zero's story where he battles and critically wounds Iris, his love interest. Zero rushes to Iris's side and the two exchange words:
Zero: Iris! … Iris…
Iris: Zero…
Zero: Hang in there, Iris.
Iris: Please… stay away from Repliforce… Let's live together in a world where only Reploids exist.
Zero: Iris, there's no world just for Reploids. It's only a fantasy.
Iris: Yes… I know… But I wanted to believe it! … I wanted to live in a world where only Reploids exist…… with you.
Zero: … Iris!
(Iris goes limp and dies.)
Zero: Iris! Iris! …. Iris…
(Zero holds Iris' body, screaming.)
Zero: Nooo!! This isn't happening!! There's no reason for me to go on! What… What am I fighting for?!
Spread
Since its original upload on youtube on December 18, 2006, the original video with the voice acting has accumulated over 880,000 views on youtube, and spawned several parody clips and images, particularly on youtube. The fan site "The Megaman Network" held a contest in 2010 where users could remix/recreate the infamous scene[1], the winners receiving a picture of Zero with an autograph from Mega Man X8's voice actor Lucas Gilbertson (Zero).
