About

"What If We Used 100 Percent of the Brain?" is a memorable line from the 2014 sci-fi action film Lucy. In 2018, a two-panel image macro based on the scene gained popularity among Spanish-speaking users as a way to comment on both intelligent and unintelligent human behavior. In January 2019, the macro reached mainstream popularity on Reddit.

Origin

On July 25th, 2014, sci-fi action film Lucy [1] premiered in theaters in the United States. In one scene[2], professor Samuel Norman (played by Morgan Freeman) is asked by an audience member about the hypothetical possibility to use one hundred percent of human's brain.

While it is unclear where exactly the template was used first, the earliest examples of the meme can be tracked to at least December 18th, 2018[7].

if we really only used 10%, then in engineering phrases, that either means we have a safety factor of 10x, or we literally just have 10 times more brain than we can ever hope to use. Seeing as brain tissue is expensive to maintain, in terms of food and oxygen, that is a lot of resources going to maintain something that, according to this rumor, we never use. Ergo, if we saw a 90% reduction in brain matter, we could achieve an 18% reduction in needed oxygen, with no loss in brain power

but that's not how it works. Why? because we DO use most of our brain

I'm aware this is a meme, btw, just that SOMEONE needs to be a party pooper, so may as well make it the first comment to get it over with
