Hey What's Ur Job and Hey What's Ur Interest refer to a series of memes based on a comic in which two characters ask the third about their job or special interest and get the wrong impression after they provide an unclear description. Based on a webcomic by artist Mhuyo, the exploitable meme format achieved virality on X / Twitter in May 2024.

Origin

On May 7th, 2024, artist @Mhuyo posted a four-panel comic about themselves on X^[1] / Twitter. In the comic, two characters ask the artist, who is not a native English speaker, about their job. The artist answers that she's a "con artist," meaning that she's an artist who displays and sells her work at fan conventions, while the two characters get the wrong impression that by "con artist" she meant "scammer." The comic garnered over 20,000 reposts and 206,000 likes in four days (shown below).

Later on May 7th, @Mhuyo shared a template for the comic on X^[2] / Twitter.

Spread

Starting on May 7th, 2024, multiple users shared memes based on the template, with some versions changing the premise from "what's your job" to "what's your interest" or "what's your favorite X" and others editing the comic in unexpected and humorous ways.

For example, on May 7th, X^[3][4] users @Will_C_True and @bibblefutzer posted some of the earliest found edits of the comic, which received over 230 reposts and 4,900 likes and over 170 reposts and 2,200 likes, respectively, in six days (shown below, left and right).

More versions of the format shared in the following days went viral on X / Twitter. For example, on May 9th, 2024, X^[5] user @Haysprite posted a misinterpretation meme that garnered over 5,800 reposts and 69,000 likes in two days (shown below, left). On May 10th, X^[6] user @bagplants posted a meme that received over 19,000 reposts and 143,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).
