When The Function Got Hennessy refers to a series of image macros using the caption "when the function got Hennessy" along with an unrelated, often nonsensical, image. The earliest known version of the meme was posted to FunVizeo in February 2021 and gained viral spread over the following year, inspiring new variations.

Origin

On February 14th, 2021, FunVizeo^[1] user Kevin posted an image macro using a drawing of Bigfoot under the caption "when the function got Hennessy" (shown below). That same day, Instagram^[2] user salad.snake reposted the meme, gaining over 39,400 likes in a year.

Spread

On December 4th, 2021, Instagram^[3] user frogseatingass posted a version of the meme using a photo of Dwight D. Eisenhower under the caption, gaining over 10,000 likes in four months (shown below). A higher-quality version of the meme was shared on Facebook^[4] on December 19th. On December 22nd, the meme was reposted to r/ihaveihaveihavereddit,^[5] gaining over 500 upvotes in four months. On December 26th, it was shared by Facebook^[6] page Evil Niqqa Memes 3, gaining over 970 reactions and 380 shares in four months.

On March 20th, Twitter^[10] user @eczemabwoi posted a meme showing The Riddler from The Batman under the phrase, gaining over 150 likes in a week. On March 21st, 2022, Instagram^[7] user armedrepublicofschizos reposted the meme, gaining over 50 likes in a month. On April 25th, Instagram^[8] user merciless.sungod posted a version of the meme with an Asian fisherman as the image, gaining over 6,700 likes in three days (shown below). The meme was reposted by Instagram^[9] user da_chungles the next day, gaining over 5,800 likes in two days.
