“When They Go Low, I Go Lower” refers to a quote from American politician Eric Mays during a council meeting in July 2022. The moment was resurfaced on TikTok in March 2023 and turned into a viral sound in which people joked about being left on read or other relationship-themed problems that required the person to “go lower.”

Originally recorded on July 11th, 2022, Eric Mays’ earliest found post containing the quote was uploaded on TikTok[1] by user @.destinyrenee_ on March 10th, 2023. The video (shown below) shows the politician giving a motivational speech during a council meeting in which he says the line “When they go low, I go lower.” The post amassed over 2.5 million plays and 452,000 likes in 10 months.

The post by @.destinyrenee_ was turned into a viral sound on TikTok, being used for more than 39,000 other videos. For instance, on May 19th, 2023, TikTok[2] user @mr.prada728 used Mays’ audio for a video with the overlay text “When he mentions 1 girl so now I gotta mention 17 girls.” The video (shown below, left) received over 3 million plays and 2.9 million likes in eight months. On April 12th, 2023, TikTok[3] user @caintrent used the politician’s video (shown below, right) as an exploitable alongside the overlay text “When I get left on delivered and so I block them.” The post amassed roughly 3 million plays and 1.2 million likes in nine months.
