Whether We Wanted It Or Not, We've Stepped Into War With The Cabal On Mars is a copypasta originating from the Cerberus Vae III strike in Destiny. Prior to the fight, Commander Zavala introduces the context with a monologue explaining the context for the upcoming battle. The level's popularity meant that players would hear the monologue often, leading it to be spammed in memes and on social media.

Origin

In Destiny, released September 9th, 2014, one of the Level 20 strikes is the Cerberus Vae III strike in which players attempt to kill the commander of Cabal forces in the Exclusion Zone, Valus Ta'aurc.^[1] Prior to the fight, Commander Zavala says:

"Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold."

The level became one of the most commonly played fights in Destiny,^[1] leading the monologue to become infamous among players. This led users to create multiple parodies around the monologue and turn it into a copypasta. For example, on May 8th, 2018, YouTuber Tuba Centurion posted a video parody of the monologue, gaining over 277,000 views (shown below, left). On September 24th, 2019, YouTuber Minty posted an example of the copypasta that gained over 90,000 views (shown below, right).

On December 10th, 2020, The Game Awards posted the copypasta to their Twitter,^[2] gaining over 1,400 retweets and 13,000 likes (shown below, left). On June 25th, 2019, Redditor BrethrenMoons posted a Me and the Boys meme referencing the copypasta to /r/Destiny2,^[3] gaining over 6,000 points (shown below, right).
