Wong's Exit refers to a series of jokes and image macros about the character Wong (played by Benedict Wong) and his sudden departure from the 2018 Marvel superhero film Avengers: Infinity War.
Origin
On April 27th, 2018, the film Avengers: Infinity War was released in theaters in the United States. In the film, the character Wong tells the protagonist Tony Stark aka Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.) that he must protect the "Sanctum" in New York City and cannot join in the adventure of going after Thanos and the Infinity Stones. Wong then opens a portal with his hands and leaves the film.[1]
Spread
Following the film's release, people online began making jokes about Wong exiting the film. On April 29th, 2018, Twitter [2] user @jeffstashbox tweeted a picture of Wong with the caption "This nigga dipped." The post (shown below, left) received more than 6,00 retweets and 16,000 likes in four days.
Later that day, Twitter[3] user @JValentine retweeted this post and added the caption "'I’m bout to head to the crib, what y’all bout to do?'" The post (shown below, left) received more than 25,000 retweets and 59,000 likes in four days.
Additionally, more people began positing original jokes about Wong's exit. Twitter[4] user @GrantGoldberg posted a picture of the character Squidward from SpongeBob SquarePants looking out at one of Wong's portals and the caption "Wong during Infinity War." The post (shown below, center) received more than 28,000 retweets and 72,000 likes in four days.
Throughout the next few days, people used Wong's ability to travel quickly to express the speed at which they would do something. On April 30th, Twitter[5] user @DavidDTSS tweeted a picture of Wong with the caption "'Hey I'm celebrating my birthday at a restaurant. You're invited!' Me:" The tweet (shown below, right) received more than 130 retweets and 315 likes in three days.
On May 2nd, Twitter[6] user @LeanandCuisine tweeted a mock conversation between Wong and Bruce Banner, the Incredible Hulk. The post (shown below) received more than 1,000 retweets and 2,600 likes in 24 hours.
Several media outlets covered the meme, including The Daily Dot, [7] ComicBook.com[8] and more.
