Thanos Edits refers to a series of jokes, photoshopped images and image macros toward the design of the character Thanos from the Marvel film Avengers: Infinity War.

Origin

On November 28th, 2017, the first trailer for the film premiered, giving fans their first look at Thanos without the headgear. The video (shown below) received more than 47 million views on YouTube [2] within 24 hours.



Spread

Shortly after the video was posted, Twitter[3] user @kibblesmith tweeted a series of pictures of various Marvel characters not wearing their trademark helmets, which he refers to as "little hats." The final tweet (shown below, left) featured Thanos with the caption, "AVENGERS: THE SEARCH FOR THANOS' LITTLE HAT." The post received more than 100 retweets and 800 likes in 24 hours.

People responded to the tweet with various jokes, including photoshops of Thanos with different hats on (examples below, center and right).

That day, Twitter[4] published a Moments page regarding the response to the trailer and the hat. Several media outlets including ComicBook.com,[5] The AV Club[6] and more published lists of people talking about the hat.

That day, Redditor [7] mtlgrems posted an illustration of Thanos as Salt Bae in the /r/ComicBooks subreddit. The post (shown below) received more than 5,000 points (93% upvoted) in less than 24 hours.



Additionally, Redditor[8] DarkJedi3000 photoshopped Thanos' head onto the body of Rick Harrison from Pawn Stars in the /r/marvelstudios subreddit. The post (shown below, left) received more than 3,000 points (97% upvoted) in 24 hours. On Imgur [9] the post (shown below, center) received more than 3,000 points and 300,000 views. Redditor[10] b0to posted Thanos' picture next to Heavy from Team Fortress 2 in the /r/TF2 subreddit, receiving more than 1,000 points (98% upvoted).

The following day, Redditor[11] posted a variation of Who would win? featuring, which shows the Avengers described as "Earth's mightest heroes" and Thanos, described as a "giant grape." The post (shown below, right) received more than 1,200 points (97% upvoted) in less than 12 hours.

You’re telling me that people aren’t taking Thanos 100% seriously? But look at how rad his helicopter is!

In all seriousness, he did end up looking a little weird in the trailer, but I assume that’s mostly just because he lacked his iconic helmet, which I’m sure he’s going to put on eventually. Assuming he’s portrayed accurately, I suspect a lot of people will be surprised at how cool a villain he is
