"Write That Down, Write That Down" refers to a memorable scene from SpongeBob SquarePants in which SpongeBob and Patrick are observing Squidward through binoculars, with SpongeBob telling Patrick to write down his actions. Online, the image has been circulated as a macro and a reaction.

Origin

On April 3rd, 2004, the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "The Camping Episode" premiered in the United States.^[1] In the episode, SpongeBob and Patrick are watching their neighbor Squidward try set up a tent, with SpongeBob telling Patrick to write down his actions (shown below).

Spread

On December 6th, 2015, Twitter user @asapchong posted a now-unavailable edit of the scene, with a caption reading "When DJ Khaled reveals another key to success".^[2] In the following days, the tweet was reposted by multiple popular accounts, including an Instagram repost which gained over 200,000 likes.^[3][4]

In the following years, the image macro gained moderate popularity as a reaction, with notable examples appearing on Twitter and Reddit. For example, on April 24th, 2016, Twitter user @imlovinimlivin used the image in a joke about the Kardashians, which gained over 5,900 retweets and 6,200 likes in three years.^[5] On March 18th, 2017, Twitter user @MeninistTweet tweeted a joke about the More Life mixtape by Drake, which received over 4,400 retweets and 13,000 likes in two years.^[6] On June 25th, 2018, Redditor Hakop23 posted a variation involving a joke about college professors, which gained over 44,200 upvotes in six months.^[7]

On March 18th, 2019, Redditor thejmoneyman used the image for a J.K. Rowling meme which received over 32,200 upvotes in /r/dankmemes subreddit in one month, prompting a surge in the format popularity.^[8]

In the following weeks, a large amount of memes based on the image were posted on Reddit, primarily on the subreddits /r/dankmemes and /r/BikiniBottomTwitter.
