About
X Fandom Is Dying, Repost If You're a True Fan is a phrasal template and series of ironic snowclone memes humorously suggesting that members of a certain fandom should share the post to prevent their fandom from dying. The memes often reference made-up fandoms or subcultures and products that could hardly qualify for possessing a fandom. The format is also sometimes used to make inappropriate names for fandoms of various franchises in an attempt to bait people into looking silly.
Origin
On February 1st, 2018, an image macro with the caption "THE MEGAMIND FANDOM IS DYING / REPOST IF YOUR A TRUE MEGAMINDER" was posted to Instagram. The image[1] gained at least 8,000 likes before deletion (shown below).
Later that year, on October 26th, 2018, a post about the movie Hoodwinked was uploaded to the OkBuddyRetard Subreddit, where it[2] gained 2,500 upvotes in two years (shown below).
Spread
As the meme began to spread, it started to move away from movie references and be more about baiting people with silly words and phrases. This is best seen in the meme posted to OkBuddyRetard[3] on January 29th, 2020, by PeePeeSlayer19, which earned 5,200 upvotes in 10 months (shown below).
On May 20th, 2020, Know Your Meme user LiamGrump,[4] using Club Penguin as the catalyst (shown below).
