About
X Shakes Cola (Japanese: コーラを振るだけ, Cola o furudake) refers to a series of hand-drawn animations featuring various characters dancing while shaking and spraying a bottle of soda at their partner, while being set to a remix of the 1998 rock song "HOT LIMIT"[1] by Japanese musician T.M. Revolutions.
Origin
The original soda-shaking animation was created by Nico Nico Douga user Chikurin no min (竹林の民), and was uploaded to the site on October 14th, 2012.[2] It was initially shown as bonus footage for a "smooooch ・∀・" parody video (shown below, left) featuring the 2channel characters known as Yaranaio.[3] An extended version of the animation, which also included a pie fight between the characters, would be uploaded to Niconico by its creator a week later, on October 22nd, 2012.[4] (shown below, right)
Spread
The video was positively received with users in the site, helping it amass over 500 thousand views as of August 2013. It would eventually prompt other amateur animators on the site to try their hand in recreating the video with characters from anime, manga, and video game series. Additionally, the original video would also be remade with a more fluid animation, and being uploaded to NND on January 28th, 2013.[5] (Shown below, left) The video ended up gaining over 600 thousand views in just seven months and be viewed over 1.2 million times overall, becoming another template for creators. The series would then reach its peak, when a parody video featuring the character known as "Gon-san" from the manga series Hunter x Hunter was uploaded to Niconico on June 3rd, 2014.[6] (Shown below, right) The video became a immediate smash among Niconico users, with it becoming the most viewed in the series by attaining more than 1.5 million views.
However, in mid 2016, many of the most popular videos, including the original videos, were taken down from Niconico in mass due to copyright claims from the song's rights holder.[7] Despite this, over 650 videos relating to the series has since been posted to Niconico[8] as of March 2017, where many of them has been re-uploaded to YouTube.[9] And though it's limited, illustrators on pixiv[10] and Nico Nico Segia[11] also began creating and uploaded stillshots based on the videos on the art-sharing sites.
