About

The "Yes or No?" TikTok Photo Slideshow Trend refers to a TikTok trend in which creators use the app's "Photo Swipe" feature, also known as the slideshow feature, to pose a questionable scenario to the viewer that satirically ends in violence (a car crash, a school shooting, arson, etc.), finishing the slideshow with a stock photo or clipart person who asks "Yes or No?" in red and green. The trend started in September 2022, predominantly using a Nicki Minaj sound and a Pop Smoke sound.

Origin

On September 21st, 2022, TikToker[1] _y3sm1n_ posted a photo swipe of images showing:

  • My bag
  • Your bag
  • My bomb
  • Your bomb
  • The school
  • Yes or no?

The photo swipe satirically inferred the bombing of the user's school, trying to enlist the help of the meme's viewer. Over the course of 12 days, the slideshow received roughly 592,700 plays and 90,300 likes (shown below).

Spread

As TikToker _y3sm1n_'s photo swipe went viral, others made their own, referencing similarly evil scenarios and using the same Nicki Minaj sound.[2] For instance, on September 22nd, 2022, TikToker[3] justsomeonestupid0 posted a photo swipe that used the same sound but referenced gasoline, a lighter and lighting a school on fire (shown below). Over the course of 11 days, the slideshow received roughly 1.7 million plays and 347,100 likes.

Also on September 22nd, 2022, TikToker[4] d.blas_ posted a "Yes or No?" photo swipe that joked about willful participation in a car accident (shown below). The photo swipe received roughly 5,800 plays and 870 likes in 11 days, however, later on the same day, TikToker[5] luvluvoni saved and reposted d.blas_ photos, creating their own photo swipe using a Pop Smoke sound[6] that gained roughly 1.9 million plays and 258,100 likes in 11 days.
