"You Have $5 to Build the Perfect Man" Parodies refers to posts making fun of social media posts that challenge users to select traits of an ideal partner on a budget of a certain amount of money, with each trait being assigned a monetary value. In the parodies, users make it so the only traits one can afford with the parameters make the "perfect man" a humorous character, like Waluigi" or Garfield.
Origin
A typical "You have $5 to build the perfect man" post will set a budget to create an idealized partner, and then assign desirable traits a certain amount of money (example shown below).
One of the earliest posts parodying the meme was posted to Twitter by user @adda_boi[1] on January 23rd, 2017, gaining over 23,000 retweets and 64,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
The meme saw a resurgence in April of 2018 after an April 23rd post by @dubstep4dads posted a parody making the "perfect man" the character Stuart Little, gaining over 43,000 retweets and 190,000 likes (shown below, left). Following that post, many more users created parodies with the template. For example, on the 24th, Twitter user @isiahxmartin made the joke with the punchline as food television personality Guy Fieri, gaining over 1,700 retweets and 5,800 likes (shown below, right).
On the 26th, the popularity of the template was the subject of a Twitter Moments[2] post, compiling some of the most popular examples of the format (examples shown below).
