About

"You Locked The Door?!", sometimes known as "You Locked The Door Joseph?!" is a YouTube video, edited using Miku Miku Dance program, of a character crying, frightened by another character politely knocking then violently banging at the door of their room. The fad took hold on the video-sharing site as more videos were created with characters from various universes.

Origin

On June 4th, 2014, YouTuber Hikari Neko uploaded a video titled MMD You locked the door?! [+DL] featuring a short clip of Akita Neru from the Vocaloid series knocking then banging at a door in anger, with another character on the other side crying (shown below, left). It accumulated over 120 000 views in the next 9 months. The audio and situation itself were taken from a Vine video titled White moms vs Black moms…. When kids lock doors and made one year earlier by DRose who uploaded it to YouTube on June 25th, 2013 in which she played on stereotypes and perceived parenting differences between white and black people (shown below, right).

Spread

Hikari Neko posted the stages and motion used in the description of her video, inviting anyone to edit as they please.
One of the first YouTube videos to reuse it was made by Xion-Chan MMD on the same day, featuring characters from the Hetalia series (shown below).

From then on, an impressive amount of videos has been made on the site[1]. One of the most popular of them all, with over 8 million views as of March 2015, is the second video of a series made by Kiana Ruiz and uploaded on June 19th, 2014, featuring Elsa from Disney's animated movie Frozen (shown below).
