About

You Smell Like You Farted refers to a freestyle rap battle video originally uploaded to Vine in parts in 2015 featuring rapper TLE Cinco before he was famous. The most well-known line from the video is "You smell like you farted, A-B honor roll, all F's, you retarded." An audio clip of TLE rapping the verse with added Vine Thud sound effects went viral on TikTok in December 2020 and also saw use in video edits on YouTube.

Origin

On February 15th, 2015, Viner[1] Tommy Pickles posted a series of four Vines showing one amateur rap battle. The first part features a rapper now known as TLE Cinco rapping, "You smell like you farted," followed by his friends echoing "rated," then rapping, "A-B honor roll, all F's, you retarded," followed by everyone around him cheering. The Vine gained over 20,700 Revines, 20 million loops and 30,000 likes before Vine's closure. A complete version of the video was uploaded by YouTuber Lil Roast on May 16th, 2016, gaining over 884,000 views in five months (shown below).

Spread

In early December 2020, a since-deleted TikTok account uploaded the Vine with additional Vine thud sound effects added at the end of each bar. The original sound[2] for this video became notably popular, inspiring over 50,000 videos in roughly 10 months. The videos mainly consist of fail compilations with the fails timed to the Vine thuds (most popular examples shown below, left and right).

A similar trend that month saw TikTokers move and dance around the room, often sped-up, posing in a specific way on each Vine boom and transitioning to an image that resembles that shape for a frame (examples shown below, left and right).

On December 19th, YouTuber Quality posted a compilation of the trend, gaining over 200,000 views in 10 months (shown below).

The sound also became popular in video edit memes around the same time leading into 2021. For example, on February 9th, 2021, YouTuber Justaskelly posted an Among Us themed video using the sound, gaining over 225,000 views in seven months (shown below, left). On April 22nd, YouTuber marehawk uploaded one using Johnny Test footage, gaining over 236,000 views in five months (shown below, right).
