Yesterday, former President Donald Trump "Truthed" that he has accepted the endorsement of "Swifties For Trump," a group that does not exist and has been entirely fabricated by right-wingers with access to AI-image generators.

Donald Trump accepts AI-generated endorsement

Along with his "acceptance," the former President and current Republican nominee posted screenshots of tweets that feature AI-generated images of women in shirts that read "Swifties for Trump," as well as an AI-made image of Taylor Swift in an Uncle Sam pose saying she wants "YOU" to vote for Trump.

The images were shared by multiple anonymous, right-leaning Twitter / X accounts, such as akafacehots, that are frequently dinged for spreading misinformation by Twitter's Community Notes.

While there may, of course, be Taylor Swift fans who support Donald Trump, it seems no such official coalition exists. There is a "Swifties For Trump" Twitter account that was created in July and has over 3,700 followers, but it regurgitates right-wing talking points and tweets and does not showcase Taylor Swift fans who are also Trump supporters.

However, one of the four images Trump shared is genuine. It is of Liberty University undergraduate Jenna Piwowarczyk, who has an Etsy shop called "SwiftiesForTrump" where she sells shirts with the slogan. As of today, she has sold six shirts according to the site's stats.

Six sales on the Swifties for Trump page

Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Cheung told Deadline “Swifties for Trump is a massive movement that grows bigger every single day.”

On the flip side, there is a "Swifties for Harris" campaign that has been verified by Wired. The co-founder of that group, Irene Kim, told the publication, "We do not represent every Swiftie, but I think there is a reason we don’t need AI to show our support for Kamala."

As for Swift herself, she has not endorsed either Presidential candidate, but it seems unlikely that she will support Trump in his reelection bid. In October 2020, she endorsed President Joe Biden and criticized Trump for "stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency."

Swift also has been the victim of AI manipulation in the past, as lewd, AI-generated pictures were spread of her earlier this year.
