Page Six broke the news earlier this morning, publishing a statement from Musk that called the pair "semi-separated" but "on good terms."
"We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms. It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in LA. She’s staying with me now and Baby X is in the adjacent room."
In Musk's characterization, it sounds as though the pair can't make much time for each other with their busy schedules but still get together when they can. Page Six does not clarify who maintains custody over the pair's child, X AE A-12.
In their three years together, the couple routinely ignited the imaginations and meme machine of the online world. Since their coming out at the 2018 Met Gala, they drew the fascination of social media, primarily because, in the eyes of onlookers, it seemed like the electronic indie music darling and le epic billionaire was an extremely bizarre match.
The couple seemed game to play into the spectacle they created, dancing together, appearing on SNL together and giving their baby a name made up of symbols. Their relationship also generated some unflattering headlines, including the time Grimes begged Elon to stop posting and the unforgettable feud Grimes had with Azealia Banks at the time Musk got in trouble for joking about fixing the Tesla stock price at 420.
Unsurprisingly, news of their split had Twitter users firing off memes.

Still, perhaps no meme about their breakup nor headline-grabbing story from their time together will have as much impact on society as this contender for the greatest tweet of all time.
