Smash Mouth Singer Steve Harwell To Retire For Medical Reasons After Chaotic Performance
Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell is retiring to focus on his mental and physical health after footage of him appearing inebriated at an upstate New York concert went viral on TikTok.
@doesthisfeelgood the most chaotic show I’ve ever been to ##smashmouth ##heynow ##allstar ##shrekisloveshrekislife
In the clip, Harwell threatens audience members, saying to one, "I’ll fucking kill your whole family, I swear to God." He also drops his drinks and sways unnaturally on stage, suggesting intoxication. At one point, it appears as if he gives a Nazi salute.
Reps for Harwell told the New York Post that the performance was related to an ongoing medical condition and that he was retiring from the band to focus on his health, effective immediately.
"Steve has been dealing with long-term medical issues over the last 8 years and during his last performance at the Big Sip stage, he suffered numerous symptoms directly linked with his current medical situation. As of today, Steve will be retiring from Smash Mouth to focus on his physical and mental health."
Last year, Harwell came under fire for playing the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota at the height of the pandemic, telling concertgoers, "We're all here together! Fuck that COVID shit!" An attendee later died from COVID-19, though it's unclear if that was a direct result of his attendance.
Online, Harwell is obviously best known as the singer of "All Star," which was one of the most enduring memes of the 2010s thanks in large part to its association with Shrek, which the group is said to have embraced.
