Videogamedunkey Jumpscares Nintendo's Indie Direct Viewers
With all the time YouTube comedian and gamer VideoGameDunkey perceivably devotes to ticking off fandoms, it's easy to forget that he also started a video game publishing company called BIGMODE in late September last year.
After its announcement roughly six months ago, the company went largely under the radar, though it has been periodically referenced in his videos on his YouTube channel. In early 2023, Dunkey then announced that the company's first game would be Animal Well, a 2D, puzzle-focused Metroidvania created by Billy Basso.
Still, you'd be forgiven if you forgot all of that ahead of yesterday's Nintendo Direct focusing on indie games and jumped out of your seat when Dunkey himself appeared onscreen.
Dunkey introduced the game with Basso near a creek in a brief sketch where Basso explained his inspiration for Animal Well.
The mere sight of Dunkey was apparently enough to send some on social media into a frenzy, for while Dunkey's videos are primarily innocuous, they have a history of angering fanbases who disagree with his negative opinions, particularly the Sonic and Xenoblade Chronicles fandoms.
Suffice it to say, some were very mad about Dunkey's appearance.
Evidently, VideoGameDunkey remains a controversial figure in certain online circles, though most without skin in the argument about the YouTuber seem to think Animal Well looks pretty cool.
The game is due to be released in early 2024.
