'White Dudes For Harris' Suspended On X After Raising $4 Million For Harris, Leading Some To Suspect Elon Musk Is Tipping The Scales
White Dudes For Harris, a fundraising Zoom call for Kamala Harris featuring high-profile white male celebrities and politicians, aimed at countering the narrative that "white males" are Donald Trump's primary demographic, had an excellent afternoon yesterday after the group raised roughly $4 million for the Vice President as a result of the call.
By the end of the day, their account that was quickly garnering virality was suddenly suspended on Twitter / X.
It's unclear what rule the @dudes4harris Twitter account violated to earn the suspension. A screenshot posted by organizer Mike Nellis shows they were reported for violating the site's rules against "evading suspension," though it remains unclear how they did that.
The suspension has been lifted and the account is active as of the morning of July 30th. However, the incident raised eyebrows on social media among many who drew a straight line between the fundraiser's rousing success and subsequent suspension.
Several onlookers suspected that the suspension was the work of Elon Musk, who has consistently voiced right-wing beliefs on the platform, as well as support for Harris' opponent. It struck many as ironic that Musk, who recently claimed Google was committing election interference by allegedly suppressing searches of Donald Trump, would step in to quash a Democratic account on his platform.
As of now, there is no evidence suggesting Musk was directly responsible for suspending the @dudes4Harris account, but that hasn't stopped widespread speculation today.
Some have theorized that the suspension was due to the creation of a similar account, @dudesforharris, which may have triggered an algorithmic ban. However, Mike Nellis called that claim false.
Twitter / X has yet to clarify what prompted the suspension of the @dudes4harris account, but apart from the suspension, the fundraiser was undoubtedly a success for the group as the 2024 Presidential Election continues drawing closer.
