White House Correctly Executes 'Worst Person You Know' Meme On Matt Gaetz
Historically, when politicians try memeing, they are very bad at it, but the official White House Twitter / X account shocked the world (or at least, Twitter) when it effectively used the "Worst Person You Know Made A Great Point" meme format to describe a recent statement from controversial Congressman Matt Gaetz.
Gaetz, a member of House Republicans' far-right caucus, has long been an outspoken critic of House Leader Kevin McCarthy, to the point where one congressman nearly beat him up after Gaetz staunchly refused to vote for McCarthy in a tedious and lengthy House Speaker election.
Currently, the U.S. government is heading towards a shutdown because the Republican-controlled House of Representatives cannot agree on a short-term funding bill that is necessary to keep the government open beyond September 30th.
Yesterday, Gaetz blamed the incoming shutdown on McCarthy's failure to honor compromises he'd made with Congress' far-right caucus to get him elected as House Speaker.
In his statement to the media, Gaetz said Republicans couldn't blame Democrats for Congress' failure to pass individual spending bills that would have avoided the shutdown crisis.
Fox News reporter Liz Elkind tweeted his comments, which read, "We will have a government shutdown and it is absolutely Speaker McCarthy's fault. We cannot blame Joe Biden for not having moved our individual spending bills. We cannot blame House Democrats. We can't even blame Chuck Schumer in the Senate."
Evidently, the White House agreed with this take, as it quote-tweeted Gaetz's comments with the famous Clickhole headline.
Social media was largely stunned by The White House posting what many perceived as a well-executed meme, which speaks to the low bar politicians have set for their ability to meme effectively in the past.
While at first glance, The White House dipping its toes in memeing is surprising, perhaps it shouldn't have been unexpected. Last August, The White House hired Megan Coyne to run its socials, and Coyne is the woman who put the state Twitter / X account for New Jersey on the map with highly meme-literate posts.
Shortly after getting hired, Coyne made splashes by using the White House Twitter / X account to call out conservatives who were complaining about student loan forgiveness, publicly posting how much firebrands like Ben Shapiro and Marjorie Taylor Greene had received in loan forgiveness.
