It is a running debate between cis and trans anime fans wheter "traps" called Otoko no ko which means "male daughter" in Japanese are transgender and if so is it an insult to call them traps.

One side says all such characters should be considered traps unless explicitly said to be trans in big bright red letters. No matter that they never ever ever EVER present as a male or mention it unless it is relevant. They are just dudes who magically look great in a dress without trying.

The other says that most if not all such characters are trans and "trapping" is more about a situation or what we call "passing". They pass well and look attractive so men find them attractive. They are not actively "trapping" someone. The other term used is "p---- stunting" (Urban Dictionary Link) this is going out to actively trick straight men.
