The spiciness wasn't meant discourage all animals, it was meant to discourage mammals specifically.

Birds are immune to capsaicin (the thing in chilli peppers that made them spicy). The reason is birds are the intended dispersers of the fruit's seeds because mammals (especially small rodents) could destroy the seeds by chewing them.

We have a more mutually benefitial relationship with literal plants and vegetables than we do with over half of humanity.
