Notes:
The Vila, also known as a Vile, is a type of fairy from Slavic mythology associated with storms (especially hail storms), nature and fertility.
Specifically for Croatia, it is said that every single Vila is the pinnacle of human beauty, often accompanied by splendid wings and eyes that flash like lightning. It was said that her hair was the source of her power and to lose but a single strand would cause them to die of sadness.
To hear a fairy speak would cause all who heard such a pleasantly sweet thing to become deaf to the sound of human speech, as their hearts desired to not listen to anything as pure and sweet ever again.
However, for al this beauty, the Vila has a secret that it is terribly ashamed off. Beneath a dress as pure as snow, the Vila has the legs of donkey, goat or ox. If anyone notices these legs and appears to be astonished by them, the embarrassed fairy will cast a terrible spell which will bring ruin and misfortune down upon them.
Yes, I tried to find images of Vila with hooves and I couldn't find one that wasn't too lewd for KYM so you'll just have to imagine a donkeys legs hiding in there somewhere. The link at the start has a nice picture though.
Unlike the bloodthirsty, child-devouring monsters of Celtic mythology; Vila mostly do what stereotypical fairies do. Stealing white horses and going on joy rides, prancing about forests and banging woodsman, handing out bitching super-swords to heroes.
You know, the usual stuff.
If one is to believe the stories, the Vila were appalled by the destruction wrought upon the world during the great wars of the 20th Century and have left Croatia for pastures new. Although, on rare occasions, one can find a solitary fairy dancing in the woods or weeping at a desolate cliff or on a naked rock.
