Development files show that the alcove was meant to contain a Power Star at some point, which would have been extremely hard to find if it was kept in. The hidden 1-Up Mushroom in Whomp's Fortress is one of the best-hidden secrets in Super Mario 64. This wall of the tower on top of the fortress appears completely ordinary and has no visual indication of hiding anything. ⠀ However, punching the wall reveals a hidden alcove containing a 1-Up Mushroom.
