To clarify his account of the hierarchy of knowers, Pascal considered how different groups understand the nature of political and social hierar- chy. "Gradation. The people honor those of great birth. The demi-habiles dis- trust them, saying that birth is not an advantage of a person, but of chance" (S124). Cutting through the artifice of contemporary beliefs and practices, the demi-habiles recognize and mock the mistaken essentializations of the common people, who wrongly believe, for example, that royalty and no- bility are essential qualities. In Pascal's estimation, their judgments about the opinions of the people are only half-right-hence his term demi-habiles. If they pushed their criticisms further, they would recognize the value in customary beliefs. Although true nobility is but a fiction, it is a fiction upon which peace rests. To seek a political order grounded on something besides a customary fiction would simply yield incessant civil war, the worst of secular evils. The people, not the semiclever demi-habiles, are right, but for the wrong reasons: "The truth is very much in their opinions, but not from where they see it" (S126). Pascal's highest sort of knowers, the habiles, the truly clever, recognize these customary truths, for they acknowledge the limits of human reason, the permanence of the amour-propre and imagina- tion, and the dangers of upsetting custom.
