If they pushed their criticisms further, they would recognize the value in customary beliefs. Although true nobility is but a fiction, it is a fiction upon which peace rests. To seek a political order grounded on something besides a customary fiction would simply yield incessant civil war, the worst of secular evils. The people, not the semiclever demi-habiles, are right, but for the wrong reasons: "The truth is very much in their opinions, but not from where they see it" (S126). Pascal's highest sort of knowers, the habiles, the truly clever, recognize these customary truths, for they acknowledge the limits of human reason, the permanence of the amour-propre and imagina- tion, and the dangers of upsetting custom.
